Outdoor learning at Woodlands

Outdoor Explorers is enjoyed by pupils in every class, from Nursery to Year 2.

Our school grounds and local outdoor spaces provide rich opportunities for pupils to explore, investigate, create and learn through first-hand experience. Outdoor Explorers complements classroom learning while giving pupils time to be curious, active and adventurous.

Sessions are purposeful but enjoyable. Activities are carefully chosen to deepen curriculum learning, introduce pupils to new experiences and help them understand and care for the natural world.

What pupils experience

Outdoor Explorers may include opportunities to:

investigate plants, animals and seasonal change
explore natural materials
build, balance and construct
observe, sort, compare and classify
create artwork inspired by nature
follow trails, maps and simple routes
solve practical problems
use tools and equipment with appropriate support
work cooperatively with others
learn how to manage appropriate risks safely
take part in activities such as den building, fire lighting and outdoor cooking when suitable

Activities develop progressively and are adapted to pupils’ ages, needs and curriculum learning.

Learning beyond the classroom

Outdoor Explorers supports learning across the curriculum. Pupils may apply their knowledge of science, geography, mathematics, art, design and technology, language and storytelling through practical outdoor experiences.

For example, pupils might:

observe changes across the seasons
identify and compare living things
measure, count and recognise patterns
investigate shape, position and movement
create using natural materials
develop geographical fieldwork skills
explore events and experiences linked to class learning

Pupils learn to make decisions, solve problems and respond when something does not work as expected. They are encouraged to notice, question, explain and reflect.

Activities are planned carefully and supervised by adults. Pupils are taught how to use resources responsibly, follow instructions and make safe choices.

Activities are adapted so that all pupils can participate and experience success.
