Teaching and Learning
What we believe about learning
At Woodlands, we believe that:
- Strong relationships underpin effective learning
- All pupils can achieve highly with the right support
- Knowledge matters and should be carefully sequenced
- Learning should be purposeful, engaging and inclusive
These beliefs shape our curriculum, our lesson structures and our expectations of teaching. We are deliberate about what we teach, when we teach it and how we help pupils remember and apply their learning over time.

These principles apply from Nursery through to Year 2. In the Early Years, they are enacted through high-quality adult–child interaction, purposeful play, modelling, talk and responsive teaching. By the end of Year 2, we want Woodlands pupils to be confident, curious learners with:
- Secure foundational knowledge across the curriculum
- Positive learning behaviours and growing independence
- The language to explain their thinking and learning
- A strong sense of self-belief and belonging
- A genuine love of learning
What This Means in Practice
This vision is brought to life through everyday classroom practice. It shapes what we do every day:
- Lessons are structured to support understanding, retention and success
- Adults model calm, respectful and optimistic language
- Learning builds logically over time, with careful attention to prior knowledge
- Pupils are supported to think hard, talk confidently and reflect on learning
- Mistakes are treated as part of learning, not something to fear
The rest of this handbook sets out how this vision is enacted through classroom practice, lesson design, routines and everyday interactions across the school.
